Earlier this year, FGS Metalwork was contracted by Fort Project Management to build an extension to the Opanuku Stream Bridge on Great North Road at the northern entrance to Henderson in Waitakere.
Auckland Council felt the need improve the walkway and enhance the entrance to the Henderson shopping area so with local artist Jason Hall and Nick from Mitchell Vranjes Consulting, the project got underway.

Before work began on site, many hours of drawing took place in our office. All aspects for manufacture and installation were detailed and the way the whole structure and balustrade went together, with over 20 tonnes of steel, was testament to our attention to the smallest detail.

Clamp plates weighing 850kg were bolted to the existing piers to hold the 2200 kg, 13.5 metre beam that spanned between them. The beam was the central support member for the pipe lattice work that supports the viewing platform.

The pipe work structure and balustrade was all fabricated in our workshop in Silverdale.
After Hot Dip Galvanizing all steelwork was blasted and painted at Avondale Blasting and Coatings.
The structure was then craned into position.

The finished product is impressive to view from underneath as it appears the entire structure is just hanging off the edge of the bridge

20 tall Finial Poles with lights on top were also manufactured and installed on site at different rakes.
The unique balustrade and the grate walkway add the finishing touches at street level.

And the crowning feat.... THE WELSH PICKET! Designed by Hilton Miller.
