FGS Metalwork completed work on the Symonds Street Motorway Overbridge Saftey Barriers. This work was completed for the opening of the Rugby World Cup. We were contracted by Ron Williams from Gibbons Contractors Ltd to manufacture and install the safety barriers for ARMA (Auckland Road Maintenance Alliance). The purpose of the barriers was to prevent people falling off the footpath onto the Symonds Street on-ramp to the Southern Motorway.
Before - There was a dangerous drop off to the on-ramp. Here markings have been made for measurement purposes. This part of Symonds Street is a major bus stopping area with many thousands of commuters using this zone daily.
After (second bus shelter) The drop off made safe. Barriers were constructed to comply with NZBC F4 safety from falling code. The process involved locating services, measuring, drawing, fabrication and installation.
Accurate measurement is key to a successful result. Using lazer levels allows for measurements to the smallest degree.
AutoCAD drawing in progress. These measurements form part of the drawings that detail all aspects for fabrication in our Silverdale factory and installation by our team on site. Drawings are first submitted to the client for approval.
The fabricated product was hot dipped galvanised to AS/NZS 4680 standard by CSP Galvanising. Galvanising is a durable, low maintenance coating for industrial applications.
Doing our best to accomodate long term tenents - with a stylish application of Kiwi ingenuity.
The installation was completed during the night between the hours of 7pm and 5am as this area needed to remain operational for the public during peak travel times. A formal council approved traffic management plan was used with strict limitations for compliance. eg. the waste dirt bin had to be delivered at 7pm and removed before 5am each day. The installation team worked under task lights powered by generators to complete the job.
The success of this completed project was due to our attention to detail from initial measure and quote through to the fabrication, along with our excellent communication and co-operation with the main contractor.
